Surveying Object Points on Structures and Buildings

When surveying facade points, measurements are typically taken reflectorlessly (via laser/direct reflection). If the total station lacks this capability or if reflectorless measurements aren't sufficiently accurate, a prism is used following a two-step process:

1. Aim at the object point using the crosshairs.
2. Position the prism directly in front of the object point, maintaining a known distance to the prism center.

The prism housing quality significantly affects measurement precision, concerning:

• The distance accuracy between the prism center and the object point.
• The reliability of the prism constants provided.
• The potential alteration in length of the rear offset tip due to wear.

Features of the Precision Prism PP17.5

• Prism: Ø 17.5 mm glass, with a grinding accuracy of 2".
• Reflection: Silver mirrored back.
• Housing: Outer diameter of 22 mm, crafted from anodized aluminum.
• Distance Range: Capable of measurements up to 500 m+ (device and weather dependent).
• Durability: Features a hardened steel pin end-piece that resists wear and maintains consistent length.
• Adjustability: The prism can tilt up to 45° in any direction when placed vertically on a flat surface, facilitating alignment with the total station.
• Prism Constant: K = 0 mm (Leica = +34.4 mm), removing the need for longitudinal adjustments.
• Design: The steel pin at the theoretical reversal point of the measuring beam is only 11.3 mm from the visible prism center, ensuring symmetry.

Visor and Protective Cap

• Aids in precise alignment of the prism to the tachymeter.
• If misaligned, the cap obscures part of the prism. Proper alignment reveals the entire front side of the prism, indicating correct positioning toward the tachymeter.
• Enhances grip and protects the prism from damage and environmental factors.
• The cap is removable for easy cleaning of the prism.
